It is the luminaire with the longest history in the Zumtobel family. MELLOW LIGHT has now been around for 25 years. Only an office solution that has remained true to its roots over such a long period of time, as well as one that continues to reinvent itself again and again, can truly claim to understand the fundamental changes in the working world and the raft of opportunities offered by perpetual technological advances. As a prime example, the latest generation of MELLOW LIGHT has addressed the key issue of globalisation.
MELLOW LIGHT was launched in autumn 2016 as the first truly global Zumtobel luminaire. Regardless of whether users are located in the USA, Dubai or China, the sales start in Europe has signalled international availability of the new MELLOW LIGHT range, enabling consistent lighting concepts to be realised worldwide.
In the connected world of today, a global launch does not always sound that impressive. However, the complex range of logistical, technical and commercial challenges facing an international development team should certainly not be underestimated. “Developing a global product family means taking country-specific issues into account from the very start. We also had to meet the respective local standards and provide design solutions with different dimensions. For example, the size of the modules and the height of the driver can vary significantly, which in turn affects the height of the surface-mounted luminaire. With a diverse family like MELLOW LIGHT, these factors naturally have a major influence on the complexity of the project,” explained Joachim Frick, Global Project Leader, Development & Engineering at Zumtobel.
Joachim Frick and his team in Dornbirn coordinated the project, but effective leadership of this kind of development is only possible with the knowledge and experience of the teams in the specific markets. Mark Mendez organised the construction in the USA, while Rui Liu (Rain) and Malatesh Beedi were given responsibility for this task in the Asian and Australian markets respectively, paving the way for a worldwide production start. The new MELLOW LIGHT is therefore not only manufactured at the company headquarters in Dornbirn, but also for particular markets at three other production sites in Guangzhou (CN), Sydney (AUS) and Highland (USA).
Production is already in full swing, with stocks of the most popular variants waiting on the shelves. Now MELLOW LIGHT is marking its global launch by going on a world tour. Katja Vonach-Lubetz, Zumtobel Product Manager for office applications, and Daniel Stromborg, Practice Area Leader from Gensler, are accompanying the luminaire on its travels. Daniel Stromborg is responsible for the design of the new MELLOW LIGHT range. He has succeeded in further developing the unique design language of the product, without losing the crucial connection to the previous generations of the luminaire family. Together they are presenting MELLOW LIGHT, explaining its story and showing why this development is about so much more than just a new office luminaire – as lightlive has sought to demonstrate during this blog series. The tour started in Dornbirn, before moving on to London, Shanghai and Sydney. In 2017 the team will visit New York and a number of other cities in the USA. Product Manager Katja Vonach-Lubetz is already extremely satisfied with the results: "MELLOW LIGHT evolution and infinity is a luminaire family designed and developed individually for every person – no matter where in the world they live or work."
