The hand-crafted DIAMO downlight

A special manual production method at the Lemgo factory

Unique lighting technology developed in cooperation with the Bartenbach Lichtlabor has helped establish the DIAMO downlight from Zumtobel as a genuine highlight in the world of miniaturised recessed luminaires. What many people do not know – and what may indeed seem almost unthinkable in today's technological world – is that every exceptional DIAMO reflector is the result of a special manual production process.

Highest brilliance – the defining feature of the DIAMO LED downlight and spotlight range. This LED downlight is manufactured at the Zumtobel plant in the German town of Lemgo and then despatched to projects all over the world, offering the optimal lighting solution for areas requiring a precise light distribution – without stray light – and perfect glare control.

The unique nature of these miniaturised recessed luminaires is largely the result of pioneering lighting technology, which was developed in cooperation with the Bartenbach Lichtlabor, a long-term partner of Zumtobel. However, the DIAMO downlight has another significant feature: the reflectors for this downlight series are actually produced by hand.

Special aluminium reflectors
In a highly industrialised world controlled increasingly by computers, it is difficult to imagine – especially in the pioneering industries of electronics and lighting – that even one single step of the DIAMO production process has to be carried out manually. Yet the fine details of the small reflectors (the corners and edges) can only be properly and precisely finished by hand. This process enables improved surface quality and therefore the best gloss level possible. The reason for this is the intricate reflector geometry developed by Bartenbach Lichtlabor, who designed a solution specifically to meet the high standards of the lighting technology.

Hand-pressed aluminium reflectors
The majority of Zumtobel reflectors are made using a polycarbonate plastic that is then sputter-coated by a machine. In contrast, DIAMO reflectors are made of aluminium, which needs to anodised rather than coated. The sputtering method is not possible due to the size and depth ratios of the compact reflector. This has consequently led to the use of hand-pressed aluminium reflectors for the DIAMO range. In other words, the unique reflector technology and geometric concept created by the Bartenbach Lichtlabor can only be achieved using delicate manual production methods.

The specially designed reflectors ensure precise light distribution without stray light, whilst also providing perfect glare control. The combination of these reflectors with high-performance LED modules guarantees powerful and defined accent lighting that is characterised by excellent light quality and maximum brilliance. DIAMO brings this technology together in a compact housing with a diameter of just 68 mm and a 3-phase track. So DIAMO offers new design freedom for a variety of high-quality applications, including hotel lobbies, reception rooms and state-of-the-art offices.
