Concerts, worships, conferences, exhibitions, lectures and dance evenings – the historical hall of the Refugio in Berlin-Neukölln offers enough space for any intercultural event. Due to its renovation, Sauerbruch Hutton designed a creative lighting system with our luminaires: eight chandeliers made out of Zumtobel ONICO spotlights.
Refugio is a pilot project of the Berliner Stadtmission in Berlin-Neukölln. Since July 2015 more than 40 people who have lost their homes or had to leave them have been living and working there. Sauerbruch Hutton supports this social refugee project and has helped to renovate and transform the former prayer hall into an event hall that can be used for any events in terms of space, acoustics and lighting.
The unique design of the chandeliers by Sauerbruch Hutton was realised as a special lighting solution made of 70 ONICO spotlights together with Zumtobel and the lighting designers of Licht Kunst Licht AG.
The luminaire family ONICO from Zumtobel enables the configuration of individual lighting solutions in a consistently clear design. The unique lighting tool gives every designer the freedom to shape their own range of luminaires with suitable LED light sources and high-performance reflectors. For the event hall of the Refugio Berlin about nine ONICO spotlights were installed in the form of one chandelier. Based on the design of Sauerbruch Hutton, the locksmith's shop Thein & Rios GmbH built the lusters and was responsible for the mechanical conversion of the spotlights.
Because of the various use of the event hall, different lighting requirements were placed: Brilliant light with warm light colours, indirect light for the illumination of the ceiling and the brightening of the room, display of various user scenarios and flexibility in creating multiple lighting scenes.
In order to meet all these requirements, Zumtobel and its sister brand Zumtobel Group Services (ZGS) supplied the complete lighting solution for the Refugio: ONICO luminaires, lighting management system LITECOM, ONLITE RESCLITE and PURESIGN emergency lighting.
