Zumtobel office lighting for "Tower of Power"

1 William Street, Brisbane | Australia

With its height of 260 meters, 1 William Street is the tallest skyscraper in the city of Brisbane, Australia. The modern office building designed by Woods Bargot Architects is the new home of the Queensland Government, thus often referred to as the "Tower of Power". As an expert in office lighting solutions, Zumtobel delivered various luminaires for this impressive iconic building.

The new commercial office tower at 1 William Street is located in the Brisbane central business district, in close proximity to Parliament House. It was designed by Woods Bagot Architects to accommodate the Queensland Public Service. The building is often referred to as the "Tower of Power" which is a reference to the political strength of the commissioning former Newman Government and that the building is filled entirely with Queensland Government public servants.

Positioned on the banks of the Brisbane River, the tower reflects the river and the changing colours of the sky with its glazed façade. Drawing inspiration from the Queensland landscape, the interior design of the building echoes the natural environment, bringing the outside with colour, materiality and texture to the inside. Building on a neutral base palette of cream, lightly stained timber and grey tones, each level of the 44 floors tower is dedicated to native flora and fauna like barramundi sea bass or purple sea fan coral.

In cooperation with lighting designer Luke Mahoney from EMF Griffiths, Zumtobel developed the lighting solution for the 1 William Street office building. Custom white painted VIVO luminaires with lowered output were used throughout the buildings atria spaces in order to continue the theme of the ground floor main foyer. VIVO spotlights are characterised by excellent colour rendering and extremely uniform light distribution.

PANOS infinity and DIAMO wall washer luminaires were used for meeting rooms and boardrooms to highlight feature areas and give large quantities of vertical light for video intercom spaces. Thanks to the formal reserve with which both downlights and wallwashers blend into their architectural surroundings, PANOS infinity is the perfect lighting tool for designers and planners. DIAMO is a highlight in the world of miniaturised recessed luminaires and spotlights: high-intensity pinpoint accent lighting with excellent lighting quality and maximum brilliance.

Furthermore Zumtobel’s DISCUS spotlight system and IYON spotlights were used within the building. “Working alongside lighting designer Luke Mahoney, Zumtobel was excited to be part of lighting all the feature areas of such an impressive iconic building in Brisbane,” said Jill Thornton, Senior Account Manager Specification of Zumtobel.
