Valenza is a place of knowledge and a centre of talent for goldsmiths – and it is where the luxury brand Bulgari has opened Europe’s largest jewellery manufacturing site. Due to the complexity of the building and the need for very different lighting conditions, Zumtobel teamed up with its Thorn sister brand to deliver light for the whole project. The comprehensive lighting solution enhances the beauty of both the exterior and the interior architecture and also takes into account the safety and well-being of employees.
The Bulgari manufacturing facilities are located on the site of an old farmhouse that was once the first goldsmith studio in the Valenza region. The new complex houses the administrative offices and a cutting-edge production centre that crafts all the major jewellery collections from the Bulgari brand.
Covering a total area of around 15,000 square metres, the manufacturing studio is made up of two buildings with completely different architectural characters, helping to create the perfect bridge between innovation and tradition. The historical building from 1860 has been rebuilt and enlarged with a structure made entirely of glass.
The second building, which houses the production part of the facility, has three floors and surrounds a 600-square-metre courtyard that ensures high levels of natural light. The manufacturing studio is completely wrapped in a metallic skin that combines an aesthetic function with practical benefits. This cladding allows natural light to enter unobstructed and at the same time guarantees adequate privacy and security.
The Bulgari site is located in an area with high levels of sunlight, so it was important to provide the right light at the right time to support the human biorhythm and increase employee satisfaction. That is why MIREL evolution and LINCOR from Zumtobel have been installed in the offices, while TECTON was chosen for the laboratory. The intensity and colour of these high-quality solutions vary, depending on the natural daylight entering the buildings. INTRO and SUPERSYSTEM II illuminate the congress hall in the basement and SLOTLIGHT infinity luminaires stretch along the corridors.
The exterior lighting demanded products with very specific features, such as Contrast floodlights from Thorn. The car parks have been equipped with R2L2 and Urba fittings and ArrowFlex provides pleasant light for the green walkways.
The quality of light, combined with the colourful interior and surroundings, supports clear and open communication in the offices, conference rooms, corridors and laboratories. From water management to lighting, incorporating green spaces and large windows, the entire project was realised in accordance with the latest standards of ecological sustainability.
